How to Cancel E-Invoice in TallyPrime: Rules and Steps

After generating an e-invoice in TallyPrime, you may need to cancel it because the party, amount, items, or underlying order is wrong. The portal workflow matters: cancelling or deleting only the local voucher does not cancel its IRN.

This guide follows the current TallyPrime Release 7.0 cancellation paths and separates an IRN-only case from a transaction that also has an active e-Way Bill.

When You Need to Cancel an E-Invoice

Common scenarios that require e-invoice cancellation include:

  • Wrong rate or amount - Incorrect pricing applied to the invoice
  • Order cancellation - The buyer cancels the order after invoice generation
  • Wrong party - Invoice generated against the wrong customer GSTIN
  • Duplicate invoice - Same transaction invoiced twice by mistake
  • Wrong items - Incorrect stock items or services listed

In all these cases, cancel the generated IRN on the IRP within the allowed window before you correct the transaction. Once an IRN is cancelled, use a new invoice number for the corrected invoice.

The 24-Hour Cancellation Rule

This is the most important rule to understand about e-invoice cancellation:

An e-invoice (IRN) can be cancelled on the IRP only within 24 hours of generation. This is a portal rule, not a TallyPrime limitation. After 24 hours, an IRN cancellation request is rejected.

The 24-hour window is calculated from the exact time of IRN generation (the Acknowledgement Date and Time returned by the IRP). If you generated an e-invoice at 2:00 PM on Monday, you have until 2:00 PM on Tuesday to cancel it.

This strict timeline makes it essential to review e-invoices promptly after generation and catch any errors early. For more on reporting timelines, see our article on the 30-day e-invoice reporting rule.

How to Cancel an E-Invoice in TallyPrime 7.0

Step 1: Open the voucher in alteration mode

Open the sales voucher, credit note, or debit note that contains the IRN. Check the IRN generation time and whether the same transaction has an active e-Way Bill before you choose the action.

Step 2: Choose whether to cancel or delete the voucher

  • Cancel the voucher: press Alt+X, then press I for Cancel e-Invoice & Voucher.
  • Delete the voucher: press Alt+D, then press I for Cancel e-Invoice & Delete Voucher.
  • Retain the voucher: press Ctrl+I (More Details), choose Show More, and enter the e-Invoice Cancellation Details. You can also open the e-Invoice report and use F10 (Cancel IRN).

Step 3: Enter and send the cancellation details

Select the cancellation reason, add remarks where needed, and press Ctrl+A to save. Select Yes when TallyPrime asks to exchange the cancellation details with the portal. If you save the details without sending them, the voucher remains under For IRN Cancellation in the e-Invoice report until it is sent.

Step 4: Confirm the portal result

Check that the IRN is shown as cancelled in TallyPrime's e-Invoice report. Do not treat a locally cancelled or deleted voucher as proof that the portal cancellation succeeded.

If the Invoice Also Has an Active E-Way Bill

An e-Way Bill is not automatically cancelled merely because you cancel the e-invoice. Cancel the active e-Way Bill first, or use TallyPrime 7.0's combined action while both documents are within their cancellation windows:

  • Open the voucher and press Alt+X to cancel it or Alt+D to delete it.
  • Press I for the combined Cancel e-Way Bill, e-Invoice & Voucher action.
  • Enter cancellation details for both documents, press Ctrl+A, and confirm that TallyPrime should send them to the portals.

If you need to retain the voucher, use Ctrl+I (More Details) and enter both the e-Way Bill and e-Invoice cancellation details. Their time limits can differ, so verify the result of each request rather than assuming both succeeded.

What Happens After Cancellation

Once an e-invoice is successfully cancelled:

  • IRN is cancelled on the portal - It can no longer support the transaction
  • The same invoice number cannot be reused - The IRP will not generate another IRN for the same supplier GSTIN, financial year, document type, and document number
  • Voucher treatment follows your choice - The voucher is retained, cancelled, or deleted in TallyPrime based on the path you selected
  • Return treatment still needs review - Verify the transaction in GSTR-1 and make any permitted correction for your filing period

After 24 Hours: The Credit Note Alternative

If the 24-hour cancellation window has passed, the IRP will not cancel the original IRN. Do not cancel or delete only the TallyPrime voucher and assume the portal record has changed. Record the appropriate credit note and correct the transaction in GSTR-1 as applicable:

  1. Create a new Credit Note voucher in TallyPrime
  2. Reference the original invoice number in the credit note
  3. Enter the same items, quantities, and amounts as the original invoice
  4. Generate an IRN for the credit note when e-invoicing applies to that document
  5. Review the original invoice and credit note in GSTR-1 before filing

The original invoice IRN remains on the portal; the credit note records the adjustment. The exact return correction depends on the transaction and filing status, so have your GST practitioner review exceptional cases.

Can You Undo an IRN Cancellation?

No. Once the IRP has accepted an IRN cancellation, that portal cancellation cannot be reversed. Create a corrected invoice with a new invoice number; the cancelled invoice number cannot be used to generate another IRN.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cancel an e-invoice after 24 hours?

No. The IRP accepts e-invoice cancellation only within 24 hours of IRN generation. After that window, the original IRN remains valid. Record the appropriate credit note and correct the transaction in GSTR-1 as applicable; obtain tax advice for your specific case.

What happens to the e-Way Bill when I cancel an e-invoice?

It is not cancelled automatically. If an active e-Way Bill exists, cancel it first or select TallyPrime 7.0's combined Cancel e-Way Bill, e-Invoice & Voucher action. TallyPrime sends cancellation details for both documents; confirm portal status before cancelling or deleting the local voucher.

Can I generate another IRN with the same invoice number after cancellation?

No. The IRP does not allow another IRN for the same supplier GSTIN, financial year, document type, and document number after cancellation. Create the corrected invoice with a new invoice number.
