FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

To calculate GST on an amount, multiply the base amount by the GST rate and divide by 100. For example, if your base amount is Rs. 10,000 and GST rate is 18%, the GST amount would be 10,000 x 18 / 100 = Rs. 1,800. The total amount would be Rs. 11,800. For intra-state transactions, this GST is split equally into CGST (9%) and SGST (9%).

CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) are charged equally on intra-state transactions (within the same state). IGST (Integrated GST) is charged on inter-state transactions (between different states) and is equal to CGST + SGST. For example, if GST rate is 18%, intra-state transactions have 9% CGST + 9% SGST, while inter-state transactions have 18% IGST.

To calculate GST from a tax-inclusive amount, use this formula: Base Amount = Inclusive Amount x 100 / (100 + GST Rate). For example, if the inclusive amount is Rs. 11,800 and GST is 18%, then Base Amount = 11,800 x 100 / 118 = Rs. 10,000, and GST = Rs. 1,800.

After the GST 2.0 reforms that took effect on 22 September 2025, India runs four main GST slabs: 0% on essentials like milk, fruits and vegetables; 5% on mass-use goods such as packaged foods, footwear and most items that used to sit at 12%; 18% on most goods and services, including electronics, cement and much of what used to sit at 28%; and a new 40% slab on sin and luxury goods like aerated drinks and large cars. Special rates of 0.25%, 1.5% and 3% still apply to diamonds, gems and gold jewellery, and tobacco and pan masala stay at 28% plus cess for now. The old 12% and 28% slabs are gone.

No. Under GST 2.0, the compensation cess was scrapped on most goods from 22 September 2025 and now applies mainly to tobacco, pan masala, gutka and cigarettes, which stay at 28% plus cess until the cess loan is repaid. Most regular goods and services attract no cess. TallyPrime handles cess automatically when you set up GST rates for applicable items.
